  • HAWAII LIVE | TEAM O'NEILL QUI

Spending time on the North Shore gives surfer's an opportunity to test out their boards for the coming year on tour. For #TeamONeill athlete Soli Bailey, his few weeks allow him to dial his go-to Channel Islands short boards in all types of waves and conditions. But it's not all R&D for the World Tour, some boards are tailor-made just to conquer spots like Pipe and some are magic blades like the 6'9" that helped earn Bailey his qualification on tour last year.Take a look at what's under Bailey's feet during the Triple Crown this winter in this episode of "Hawaii Live: Team O'Neill Quivers."

  • HAWAII LIVE | TEAM O'NEILL QUI

Just as a carpenter relies on a trusted set of woodworking tools, every Hawaii-bound surfer relies on a set of go-to boards made to handle the range of waves the North Shore has to offer. You need a board for the playful days and for the XXXL days, a board for tubes, a board for airs and everything in between to tackle a winter season in Hawaii. On one of the flatter days at the O’Neill house, we asked San Clemente’s own Ian Crane to break down his five go-to Hawaii sleds, all crafted by legendary surfboard shaper Matt “Mayhem” Biolos of …Lost surfboards. There’s a lot more to Crane-o’s quiver than just varying sizes and airbrush designs. Some are glassed heavier to deal with the trade winds, some are lucky comp sticks and some have retro features, it just depends on what the day calls for. Stay tuned for the next Hawaii Live: Team O’Neill Quivers featuring Soli Bailey.

  • WATCH: THE O'RIGINALS - MAX WE

How many surfers do you know, who can lay claim to being a chemical and biomolecular engineer? Maybe none? Well, the only surfer we know who can legitimately lay claim to developing nanoparticle biosensors for food and health, is Max Weston. The son of parents who ditched the city in the 80s, to live on the sand dunes along the harsh South Australian coastline. To put it simply, you don’t get more original than this kid.Max grew up surfing all sorts of crafts but gravitated towards longboarding after falling in with a crew including Sydney loggers Matt Chojnacki and Johnny Gill. “I looked up to those guys because their perspective on surfing was and is, unique and unwavering to pop culture. They were riding beautiful single fin longboards throughout the early 2000s, in a period when it was probably the least cool thing you could do,” he says. While pursuing his passion for biomolecular science, Max also dabbled in longboarding events, discovering he was just as handy at winning heats, as he was at finding an enzyme in body fluids that’s a biomarker for cancer. He’s currently ranking high on the WSL longboard ratings and needs a top 20 finish to have a shot at the year-end world title in Taiwan. It’s remarkable to think that the guy has time to surf with all that’s going on in his head. But if there’s one thing the O’Riginals have taught us, it’s that a life dedicated to surfing can look like anything. Produced by O'Neill Australia.
